From a kitchen witch who works the old ways
I cleanse homes for a living.
Not because I fear bad energy, but because I understand how energy behaves when people live, love, grieve, argue, heal, and grow inside four walls.
I’m a kitchen witch. I work the old ways.
And I’ve learned this truth again and again:
A home doesn’t need fear driven out of it.
It needs care brought back in.
This is how I cleanse a house, whether it’s my own or someone else’s, and how I was taught through practice, intuition, and tradition. These are the methods I trust, the ones I use through Wicks & Wisdom, and the ones that stand the test of time.
I Always Start by Opening the House
Before I light anything, I open windows and doors, even just a little.
Homes hold breath the way bodies do. When life gets heavy, energy settles into corners, doorways, and quiet rooms. Opening the house allows it to release what it’s been carrying.
I pull back the curtains. I let sunlight touch the walls. I let air move.
Sometimes I say something simple, out loud:
“Anything that does not belong in this home may leave now.
Anything rooted in love may stay.”
That alone begins the work.
Smoke Cleansing: Herbs, Resins, and Old Scents
Smoke is one of the oldest cleansing tools we have, but it isn’t one-size-fits-all.
Sometimes I use herbs like rosemary, bay, or lavender – things that come straight from the kitchen and garden.
Other times, I reach for resins, especially frankincense and myrrh.
Frankincense clears, uplifts, and restores order to a space.
Myrrh grounds, protects, and seals what’s been cleared.
I burn them on charcoal when a home needs a deeper reset, after illness, grief, major stress, or spiritual work. The scent alone tells the house that something sacred is happening.
When smoke isn’t practical, I use Moonveil Sage Spray from Wicks & Wisdom. It’s gentle, effective, and perfect for everyday or in-between cleanses, especially in bedrooms, doorways, and shared spaces.
Sound When Energy Won’t Move
Some energy clings. Smoke slides right past it.
That’s when sound comes in.
I use bells, singing bowls, clapping hands, or even my own voice: especially in corners, hallways, closets, and bathrooms. Sound breaks energy apart. It loosens what doesn’t want to move on its own.
If a room feels heavy, trust that feeling. Homes speak quietly, but clearly.
Salt: The Old Boundary Keeper
Salt is non-negotiable for me.
It absorbs. It anchors. It remembers.
I use Ash & Aegis Black Salt from Wicks & Wisdom on thresholds, windowsills, and entry points: especially after a cleanse. Salt doesn’t just clear energy; it defines the boundary of the home.
Small bowls of salt left overnight in problem areas work beautifully as well. When the work is done, I thank the salt and release it outside or down the drain.
Never reuse cleansing salt. It has done its job.
Fire & Flame: Resetting the Spirit of the Home
A candle changes a house immediately.
I light candles while I cleanse, cook, or sit quietly. White for general cleansing. Black for protection. Blue for peace. Sometimes I carve words or symbols into the wax. Sometimes I don’t.
Fire transforms what air and water loosen.
I work with fire the way my ancestors did: with respect. Fire is not only a tool. It is a presence.
Water: Where the Kitchen Witch Shines
This is where the old ways truly live.
I cleanse floors, doorways, and thresholds with water… often with Florida Water, salt, vinegar, or herbal infusions. Floors carry everything we walk through. Washing them with intention moves energy out.
I mop from the back of the home toward the door. I wipe doorframes slowly and deliberately. Thresholds matter—they are spiritual borders as much as physical ones.
Florida Water is especially useful for gentle cleansing and blessing. It clears without stirring things up, making it ideal for regular maintenance between deeper cleanses.
I Speak to the House
This part matters more than any tool.
I talk to the house.
I tell it what it is now:
- A place of peace
- A place of rest
- A place of safety
Words shape energy. Homes listen.
When I Cleanse
I cleanse when:
- Life feels heavy
- Stress lingers
- Guests come and go
- Illness passes through
- Seasons change
- My intuition says now
You don’t need a dramatic reason. Feeling it is enough.
Closing the Work
I never leave a house empty after a cleanse.
I invite warmth back in: light a candle, cook a meal, play music, laugh. A cleanse clears the space. Living fills it again.
That is the rhythm.
That is the old way.
And it works.
